𖡡  Stoumont, Belgium

Exceptional heritage in Belgium: the historical Sanatorium de Borgoumont, near Liège. This impressive healthcare center was built in 1899 by architect Émile Remouchamp. This was one of the very first sanatoriums in Belgium to treat tuberculosis patients. Its elevated position sported incredible vistas on the valley, while providing clean & fresh air for hospitalised patients.

With the dawn of antibiotics treatment many sanatoria lost their original purpose. The Borgoumont institute was transformed into a hospital to treat patients with cardiovascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal conditions. In its final years it even served as a home for refugees.

Abandoned for over a decade this majestic building is finally saved. The group Leidgens, co-owner of the site, contacted me to document the buildings prior to renovation. This is to become a luxurious five-star eco hotel with 87 rooms, wellness spas and fine dining. Opening is scheduled for 2028.
